The 5th PlantaEuropa Conference:
The conference was very intensive and interesting and brought
up some very important issues relating to Crete. The first
was the election of Lucas Andrianos from the Institute of
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the Orthodox Academy
in Kolymbari to the Steering Committee of PlantaEuropa. It
is hoped that this will lead to areas of Crete being designated
'Special Plant Areas', which in turn will lead to more scientific
interest and, hopefully, funds being made available for conservation.
The second is the proposal that the 6th PlantaEuropa Conference
be held either in Poland or in Greece (possibly in Crete).
This would be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the wild
flowers of the island to a wide audience of the scientific
community of Europe and elsewhere.
A fuller report will be available
shortly.
